Toward an Additional Social Order

This refers to the article, ‘of lions and dogs’ (IE, September 19). The author argued to inform misunderstood stand of Swami Vivekananda to the RSS ideologue however in this nobility he failed to mention dehumanization through animal imagery and metaphor of Vedantic brain and Islamic body which may give birth to additional oppressive social order in India. The article rightly conveyed the idea of defining aspects of Hinduism through the lens of Swami Vivekanand and criticized RSS understanding, misinterpreted version of Hinduism. Despite in an attempt to visualize the defining line of fascist, communal, divisive idea of Hindutva and tolerant Hinduism, the imagination could not capture these lines as a spectrum of Hindu Rashtra from a soft colour of saffron to a hard.

The controversial statement of RSS chief ‘if a lion is alone, wild dogs can invade and destroy it’ was pronounced at World Hindu Congress in Chicago. The irony is that the conference was organized to commemorate 125th anniversary of historic address of Swami Vivekanand, where he boldly addressed the people as a lion to awake their consciousness. Even though the idea of Vivekananda was enshrined from Upanishad, the RSS went to next level of dehumanization and misinterpret it to unite Hindus (lions) against few sections of society (wild dogs). This was not the first time, someone intemperately depicted human as a wild dogs or other animal imagery. Such depiction and metaphorical indication of a section of society as lacking humanness lead to hate and violence. If Vivekanada tried to awake conscious of human being through imagery of lion to feel their being not as a weak and fragile then RSS chief has done his job to utilize wild strength to unite Hindu and fight for Hindu Rashtra and depicted the dissenter as invading wild dogs. The author D. Raja could not envisage that both of the leaders have dehumanized, one to awake the human however another to invoke Hindus.

The article ended with another adverse statement of Swami Vivekananda, saying India needed the Vedantic brain and Islamic body. This statement confirmed hierarchical social order where certain section of society born from head and other from different parts of body of Brahama i.e caste system. Now this idea of Vedantic brain and Islamic body may give rise to hierarchical religious order in Indian society, which can be interpreted as head the higher and body as the lower. In this way, hierarchical caste strata within religion and religious hierarchy within Indian society will give rise to future double hierarchical society.

Painting is Still Version of Theories and Literature

Recently I received an opportunity to witness paintings of Almas, a fine art student from Jamia passionate toward diverse genre of art. When I beheld her paintings, I noticed that she has a range of themes and ideas to ooze it out on a white sheet. The creative conversion of white sheet into colourful thoughts has impressed me with some thoughts, catalysed mental reaction to reflect and reminded me few theories and readings although her work needs some amelioration as every art work has scope to improve. Among her paintings, four interconnected and creative piece was the one took me here to write few words.

These four paintings reveal the nature of complexity of ‘nature’ and interconnection with human beings. Is there any distinction between human/society and nature? If yes then the boundary has been blurred and nature has internalized human or vice versa but many scholars and philosophers has distinguished these two as a separate identity. ‘Nature has not been discovered but constructed or created’ as Dona J. Haraway (1991) in her book ‘Simians, Cyborg and Women’ has discussed extensively and this is how nature has been understood as separate body on this earthy planet. Human beings have externalized nature however the fact is it’s an internal part of human and society. Poets, story writers and painters have also interpreted nature in their own way. Social positioning or location of the community or individual may provide different lenses to interpret of nature as a tribal community might have different connotation and meaning of nature than urban community. A story writer from upper caste or majority community might interpret nature in different way from a Dalit or underprivileged community. In the same way painter, poet and story writer may also visualize nature in different way. However painters have still version of those thoughts, ideas, theories, facts or stories but the meanings and interpretation has wide range of scope to understand its significance.
These painting of Almas that I chose to discuss are somehow related to above mentioned theories of different scholars. Painting titled ‘Green Dream’ and ‘I am Happy With Nature’ are depicting the process of internalization. In one painting, leaves have been grown on a human body whereas in second, a female face is blooming on a flower, signifying the bonding and attachment between nature and human. Another two paintings titled ‘Nature Brack Down’ and ‘Greenless Present Seres 2’ has creative brush upon the idea that nature can see or nature has internalize human or the hidden part of humanness in nature as well as water is the primary product of plant as S. N Ghosh (1985) suggests. These painting can also be connected to the famous literary work.

I think painting is the still version of those lines or paragraphs of a story or novel or poetry or theories which perfectly signifies or clue to draw the whole meaning of the poetry, novel, story or theories.

Polythenized Death of Nature

The word ‘nature’ and its meaning can give us better understanding of some sociological concepts like freedom, empowerment, unbiased, nonjudgmental, equality, prosperity and coherence because intrinsically it carries fundamentals of these concepts.  The social process such as cooperation, competition, assimilation, accommodation and conflict can also be seen in the natural world where diverse flora and fauna shares different elements of earth. A study was done in cancer care hospital in Australia to understand the subjective experience of patients with nature, where nature was found as empowering, connecting, supportive and normalizing. However the un-natural or manmade interventions have always created conflicts, devastation and destruction in the natural world and it has not only affected single unit of nature but menace in the whole system. It has also affected our social, economical, political and psychological aspect of our life. Take an example of Assam communal violence of 2012 and 2014, where hundreds of Bangla speaking Muslims has been killed due to natural resource holding (land) which further influenced our political, economical and social psychology. Means the nature is inherently connected to our every aspect of life but we are unable to visualize.

Today on 25th of May, 2018, we (Asrarul Haque Jeelani and Shams Wadood) were roaming in JNU campus in the morning, suddenly an idea strike in our mind to visit JNU Lake. We tried to reach out lake through dense forest but failed and then took help of Google map (JNU Lake coordinate: 28.540977, 77.162277). It was mesmerising visuals near the lake and deep forest has made us free to think, to have conversations on different topic. But a few meter ahead of lake we found a dead body of an animal, probably Neel Gaay. The scattered bones, dungs and other remnants parts of body were not inquisitive as a big entangled patch of hundreds of polythene bags (Photograph:1 and 2) looks like stomach. A close observation and discussion between us has made to understand that the bundle of polythene bag would have stuck in the stomach. The Neel Gaay might have ate these polythene and died (the reason can be this or something else) due to starvation. According to Marine Conservation Society, animals that eat plastic bags feels " a false sensation of fullness or satiation" as the litter can stay in the stomach and lead to infection, starvation and death. The Neel Gaay in the campus can be seen in JNU campus now a day, however before 20-25 years ago it was rare and reason could be dense forest where they had ample natural space, one of my friends has shared this information. The forest area has been reduced and materialistic world has been reached to the natural world which made them to eat polythene and rappers. There are some evidences of immune and fertility loss in animals due to consumption of polythene, This may affect the population of the Neel Gaay in the campus and in the general marine creature those are on high risk.

According to a report around 1400 marine species are affected by the plastic. Even birds are on high risk as a research done in between 1982 to 2001 in Netherlands, has revealed that 96% of birds had plastic fragments in their stomach. The question is who is responsible for this kind of polythenized death of nature? The accused is Human and only human. We all know how many polythene we used in daily activities even we have awareness of these hazardous impact.
